JUDITH RUSSELL CATLIN, 1955
Judith Russell Catlin died on June 20, 2008 of cancer. She was a descendant of George Catlin, the
well-known painter of American Indian life. A
lifelong resident of Washington, D.C., Judith attended Sidwell Friends
School and then Bryn Mawr where she lived in Radnor and majored in
Russian. At Harvard in 1956 she earned a
master’s degree in Slavic studies. Judith
was employed at the U.S. Information Agency where she was a writer and
picture editor on the magazine America Illustrated and
assistant editor at Al-Hayat Fi America, a magazine sent
to Arab countries. Later she worked as a
freelance writer and editor. Judy loved
Bryn Mawr and was active in the class of 1955, serving a term as class
president, many terms as a class fundraiser, and as editor of the
class’s 40th reunion booklet Voices of 1955. She also served as president of the Bryn Mawr
Club of Washington, where she established its book club.
She was active in the Sidwell Friends Alumni Association and the
Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and choir. She
is survived by her husband, Miles Jones, and cousin Bonnie Atkins, 1826
Oklahoma Avenue NE, St.Petersburg, FL 33703. Judy’s
Bryn Mawr friends remember her avid interest in photography, her
commitment to the book club, and her wit, candor and generosity, as
well as her easy-going ability to talk people into helping out whatever
worthy organization she was supporting.
