In Memoriam: Ann Schack '49

Sadly, the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City has lost one of its most valued and dedicated members. Ann Schack, '49, died in Manhattan on November 13 after a prolonged illness. Over the years, Ann was an active and committed member of the Club Board, serving in several positions, including president, secretary, class representative, and fundraising chair. She was the guiding force behind the Club's October 2005 Gala Auction, which, thanks to her devoted and tireless stewardship, was a resounding success. Ann's passing is a terrible loss to the Bryn Mawr community, and her absence will be deeply felt by those in the Club who knew and worked with her.

Ann is survived by her daughter Susan, her son Jamie, and her much-loved companion Dan McCrary. Condolences may be sent to Susan Schack at 211 E. Gravers Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19118 or Dan McCrary at 275 Clinton Avenue, Apt. 2-5, Brooklyn, NY 11205. Donations may be made in Ann's memory to the Brooklyn Parkinson Group, P.O. Box 24583 Brooklyn, NY 11202-4583.

Annual Moqattam Rug Sale, Presented by Suzan Habachy, '54, and Nimet Habachy, '67, December 4, 5 and 6

If you are looking for a unique and meaningful holiday gift for a special someone in your life, stop by the Annual Moqattam Rug Sale where you will find distinctive but affordably priced rugs, quilts, bags, notecards, and other handmade wares. The proceeds will benefit schools run by the Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE) for girls and women in Moqattam, Egypt.

Moqattam is a community in Cairo that is home to a large number of families who make their living collecting and sorting the city's garbage. Two Bryn Mawr sisters, Suzan Habachy, '54, and Nimet Habachy, '67, started the annual rug sale fifteen years ago to raise funds to help APE improve the lives of the poorest girls and women in Moqattam by providing them with education and skills to earn respect and a living. Over the years, the sale has become something of a New York holiday event and a Bryn Mawr tradition.

The Bryn Mawr Book Club Discusses The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett, December 17

On Wednesday, December 17, at 7:00 p.m., the Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett.

From Publisher Weekly's review of The Uncommon Reader:

Briskly original and subversively funny, this novella from popular British writer Bennett sends Queen Elizabeth II into a mobile library van in pursuit of her runaway corgis and into the reflective, observant life of an avid reader. Guided by Norman, a former kitchen boy and enthusiast of gay authors, the queen gradually loses interest in her endless succession of official duties and learns the pleasure of such a common activity. With the dawn of her sensibility . . . mistaken for the onset of senility, plots are hatched by the prime minister and the queen's staff to dispatch Norman and discourage the queen's preoccupation with books. Ultimately, it is her own growing self-awareness that leads her away from reading and toward writing, with astonishing results. Bennett has fun with the proper behavior and protocol at the palace, and the few instances of mild coarseness seem almost scandalous. There are lessons packed in here, but Bennett doesn't wallop readers with them. It's a fun little book.

Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Events On The Horizon

Hepburn Center Director Leslie Rescorla Speaks to the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City, February 10

Save the date of February 10 to hear Leslie Rescorla, Bryn Mawr Professor of Psychology and Director of the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center, speak about the Center's current activities and future plans. Professor Rescorla will focus her remarks on her initiatives to provide undergraduates with practical, real-world experience relevant to possible career paths through making connections with alumnae.

The Hepburn Center honors screen legend Katharine Hepburn, Class of '28, and her mother Katharine Houghton Hepburn, Class of 1899, an early suffragist and family-planning advocate. Inspired by the Hepburns' independent and proudly unconventional spirit, the Center focuses on three broad areas: film and theater, civic engagement, and women's health. The Hepburn Center has three core programming elements: the Hepburn Fellows Program, which brings to campus extraordinary women who work in one of the three areas of the Center's mission; the Hepburn Summer Internships, which enable Bryn Mawr students to obtain practical experience in one of the Center's mission areas; and the Hepburn Medal, which recognizes women whose achievements embody the intelligence, drive, and independence of the four-time-Oscar-winning actress.

Look for additional details on this event in the Club's newsletter and the January e-letter.
