youngalumlogoCommunity Service Day: Join Bryn Mawr College Young Alumnae for a "Day in the Dirt" with the Central Park Conservancy (May 16)

Please join Bryn Mawr Young Alumnae for a community service day! The New York Club is joining other Bryn Mawr clubs across the country this Spring in organizing a service day in the spirit of volunteerism. We will be partnering with the Central Park Conservancy, a non-profit that cares for Central Park, to spend a morning mulching, raking, digging and planting!

The Young Alumnae volunteer day will take place Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in Central Park. This event is entirely free and open to only 15 people, so RSVP ASAP. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow alumnae, help Central Park, and enjoy a beautiful spring day in the outdoors! The Central Park Conservancy will supply all necessary equipment and supplies as well as protective gloves. Please bring water, and/or any snacks, as refreshments are not provided. Anyone wishing to bring lunch may join organizer, Liana Sterling, '03, Young Alumnae Representative, and other members of the group for an informal picnic in the park after the project.

Masterworks of Six Centuries: A Special Art Walk with Lucille Blair, '76 (May 21)

Tunick PiranesMasterworks of Six Centuries is an annual exhibition organized by six well-established Upper East Side art dealers showing works of art ranging from the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century. Art Consultant Lucille Blair, 76, will lead a group on a visit to three of the participating galleries and then on to a charming nearby cafe. Covering some 300 years of art history, with behind-the-scene chats with the dealers, the tour will offer participants a pocket-size briefing in art history and a view of some wonderful, rarely seen works.

The afternoon will start at the gallery of David Tunick, who is exhibiting prints by Piranesi, one of the greatest printmakers of the eighteenth century. We will see a range of his work, from his early etchings to his superb views from the famous Veduite di Roma, as well as a newly discovered Piranesi drawing. The tour will then visit the Achim Moeller Fine Arts private gallery where the exhibition "Feininger at the Bauhaus" is on view. Lyonel Feininger, the American-born German painter and caricaturist, taught for many years at the Bauhaus and was associated with the expressionist group Die Brucke. We will see approximately 45 woodcuts that were part of the artist's own collection of prints, recently restituted from Germany and never before on public view. The group will also visit a third gallery TBD.

The group will then reconvene a few blocks away at the evocative Italian cafe Bottega Del Vino (based on the original Bottega Del Vino established in Verona in 1890), which is decorated with 100-year-old wood pillars, marble tops, etched copper and antique chandeliers; hopefully Sammy, the Hong-Kong born espresso master, will be working his magic that afternoon.

Bryn Mawr Book Club Discusses Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith (May 20)

strangers on a train bookcover

On Wednesday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m., the Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss Strangers on a Train, by Patricia Highsmith. Strangers on a Train, published in 1950, was Highsmith's first novel, an unsettling psychological thriller that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's classic film of the same name. From the Powell's Bookstore review of the novel:

It's no surprise that Hitchcock picked this story for a screen adaptation in 1951. With its slow-building tension, it is perfect material for the master of suspense. But, as is the case with most book-vs.-movie comparisons, the novel wins out. Highsmith's scalpel-precise language and complex psychological development twist an ordinary encounter between two strangers into an disquieting tale of obsession and peril.
