Bryn Mawr Book Club
On Thursday, January 13, 2006, the Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss The Hungry Tide by Amitav Gosh.
Excerpt from www.penguin.ca:
'Off
the
easternmost coast of India
lies the immense archipelago of tiny islands known as the Sundarbans.
Life
there is precarious, ruled by the unforgiving tides and the constant
threat of
attack by Bengal tigers. Into this place of
vengeful
beauty come two seekers from different worlds, whose lives collide with
tragic
consequences...
"An ambitious,
absorbing, vivid, and deeply moving
story. A landscape where survival depends on fabricated embankments and
meteorological luck becomes a setting for a much more unusual
adventure. Here
is a thoughtful examination of what it means to be fully human."-Sunday
Times (London)
"An exceptionally
intricate and rich novel ... Ghosh's
themes wash around his fine book like the Sundarbans tides themselves,
which
blur the distinctions between salt water and fresh, between land and
sea,
between civilization and savagery."-Financial Times'
