Expect the Unexpected with the Bryn Mawr Community of New York
Wednesday February 27, 2008

Coming-an evening of surprises in which an audience of Bryn Mawr alumnae and friends shape a theatrical production.  Play It By Ear is a highly praised New York-based performance group of four singers, a pianist, and artistic director Rhoda Levine.  Drawing on suggestions from the audience, the performers create music and lyrics.  Presented with a word, a phrase, a memory, even an object, Play it By Ear transforms an empty stage into an intense dramatic musical experience; sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, always engaging.  Each of the group's performances is truly unique, never to be exactly repeated.  A special February 27 performance will benefit the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City.

Play It By Ear has been performing for more than 10 years throughout the U.S. and abroad. To learn more about Play It By Ear, go to http://www.playitbyearinc.org/.

On February 27th, the evening will begin with a reception in Opia Restaurant's private performance area where old friends will gather and meet with other alumnae and new friends. After the performance that you and Play It By Ear have created together, you may continue the camaraderie at dinner with the cast, representatives from the College, and friends in the adjoining private dining room.

Finding Your Way As A Mother

As a pregnant woman or the mother of a newborn or infant to six-year old, finding your own way as a mother in the middle of all the noise from "experts," the media,  and popular culture is a challenge.  Parenting gurus claim to possess unique insights that give them privileged access to a higher truth about childrearing, and almost everyone else seems to have a distinctly zealous view about what is a correct and what is an illegitimate parenting technique.

Magda Pecsenye, '94, writes AskMoxie.org, an internet advice column for parents.  On Thursday, January 24, she will lead a discussion on figuring out who you are and who you want to be as a mother when you're getting a constant stream of conflicting messages from the world.  Come talk and listen at this non-judgmental discussion about honoring yourself and your children in the face of society's expectations.

Issues addressed will include:

Pregnancy:

  • That special glow: standing up under the weight of society's expectation that we enjoy every minute of pregnancy
  • Safety vs. fear-mongering during your pregnancy

Birth:

  • Promoting your own emotional safety in the face of medical or social hype

The Early Weeks:

  • Using your anger and fear reactions to figure out who you are as a mother
  • Forming a brain trust you can trust

Onward:

  • Balancing fear and safety once your child can walk away from you
  • Going off the books and trusting your own instincts

WHAT:

Finding Your Way As A Mother, discussion led by Magda Pecsenye, '94
