Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Connections
The Bryn Mawr Book Club Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary and Discusses Bride Island by Alexandra Enders, January 26
On Monday, January 26, at 7:00 p.m., the Bryn Mawr Book Club will celebrate its tenth anniversary. The book club had its inaugural meeting in January 1999 and discussed Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. In the years that followed, the book club has read, discussed, and enjoyed approximately 115 books representing diverse genres and styles. Club members have sampled both the classics (Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Dostoevsky) and the work of celebrated contemporary authors (Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, Philip Roth). They have even occasionally departed from their typical fare of "serious literature." August is the club's official "Trashy Novel Month," and, every year as the summer winds down, members indulge themselves with well-known page-turners such as The Thorn Birds and Valley of the Dolls.
At this month's anniversary meeting, the book club will discuss a special book, Bride Island, the first published novel from Bryn Mawr's own Alexandra Enders, '86. Bride Island is the story of Polly Birdswell, a recovering alcoholic trying to reconnect with the young daughter she abandoned and struggling to save her childhood home off the coast of Maine.
From a review by Roxanna Robinson, author of Sweetwater and This is My Daughter:
Bride Island is a strong and beautiful book, full of the power and beauty of the Maine coast and the power and beauty of the family. Enders has a compelling voice, a meticulously observant eye, and a deep understanding of the world of emotional engagement. This is an impressive debut.

Hepburn Center Director Leslie Rescorla Speaks to the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City, February 10
On February 10, Leslie Rescorla, Bryn Mawr College Professor of Psychology and Director of the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center, will talk with members of the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City about current activities and future plans for the Hepburn Center.
The Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center honors four-time-Oscar-winning actress Katharine Hepburn and her mother, an early feminist activist, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae who defied conventions. Inspired by the work of its namesakes, it focuses on three broad areas: film and theater, civic engagement and women's health. The Hepburn Center has three core programming elements: the Hepburn Fellows Program, which brings to campus extraordinary women who work in one of the three areas of the Center's mission; summer internships that enable Bryn Mawr students to partner with individuals who have demonstrated leadership in film and theater, civic engagement or women's health; and the Hepburn Medal, which recognizes women who have attained distinction in any of these three areas. A special focus of Professor Rescorla's remarks will be her initiatives to provide undergraduates with practical, real-world experience relevant to possible career paths by connecting them with alumnae whose work focusses on one of the Center's three mission areas.
RSVPs are required and photo identification will be required to attend the event which will be held at Con Edison Headquarters. A $10 admission fee will be collected at the door. Special thanks go to Barbara Carey, '68, for hosting Professor Rescorla's talk and donating the space for this event.
