Screening of Poumy, produced by Marian Scheuer Sofaer, ’70, at MoMA

Poumy: A Young Mother in the French Resistance.

From the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival web site:

“What turns a young French-Jewish mother into a fierce Resistance fighter?  Andree "Poumy" Scheuer Moreuil would say she simply "knew how to do the right thing." This lyrical portrait of a disarmingly understated, eloquent 91-year-old revisits her extraordinary odyssey outrunning the Nazis and joining the French Resistance.”

Please join Marian Scheuer Sofaer, ’70, the director and two of Poumy’s relatives for this special documentary showing at the Museum of Modern Art on Sunday, February 12, followed by a discussion with Marian, the director, Sam Ball, and including Michele Weil, a neonatologist, and Mathhieu Moreuil, a young lawyer who is Poumy's grandson.

“Smart, funny and a reminder of the power of a single dedicated person under pressure.”
- The New York Jewish Week

Bryn Mawr Book Club

The next book club meeting is Thursday, February 9, to discuss Father Joe: The Man who Saved My Soul by Tony Hendra.

From BarnesandNoble.com

“Tony Hendra seems an unlikely author of a book on spiritual mentoring. A gifted satirist, he was an original editor of National Lampoon; the editor-in-chief of Spy magazine; performed frequently with Python-to-be John Cleese; and starred in This Is Spinal Tap. All those comedic credits, however, only make this story more personal and gripping. In 1955, Tony was a hormone-driven 14-year-old who had blundered into a relationship with a married Catholic woman. Caught in an illicit embrace, the teenage Hendra was whisked away for redemptive counseling by Father Joseph Warrilow, a gentle, wise Benedictine monk who believed that "the only sin is selfishness." Hendra's Father Joe is a tribute to the healing hand of this good man and, thus, a meditation on faith and friendship."

WHAT: Discussion of Father Joe: The Man who Saved My Soul by Tony Hendra
WHEN:  Thursday, February 9
7:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Elizabeth Holloway
350 Bleecker Street, Apt 6E (ring buzzer no.35 if doorman is on break)
(between Charles and 10th Street)
New York, NY 10014
212 645 2737

In March we will be discussing The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (all seven books), date TBA, and the selection for the April meeting is Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara, date TBD.
