From Grape to Glass: An Evening Exploring Wine and the Wine Industry

Experience the world of the wine industry with The Italian Culinary Institute and The Bryn Mawr Club of New York City. Far beyond a wine tasting, this event will bring together a full range of wine professionals, from professors of the art and expert winemakers to producers and distributors. Paolo Villoresi, ebullient host of The Italian Cooking & Living television series and Editor-in-Chief of the magazines Italian Cooking & Living, La Cucina Italiana and Cibo, will give a historical overview, moving on to, among other respected guests, Alberto Marchetto, renowned for his winemaking in Italy, now working with U.S. producer Cap*Rock Winery. There will be a mini-demonstration of how wine is produced. A producer and distributor will describe their respective parts in wine's journey to your glass. And this is only a taste of an evening that will include sampling and informative notes on a number of wines from Italy, the U.S. and other parts of the world. Join us for this full-bodied experience; we expect a sizable group, so make your reservations soon.

The excitement is building for the Gala Auction Party on April 17 at the Cosmopolitan Club in support of a New York City Bookshop/Bookspace and the purposes of the Club and the College. Pledged items include behind-the-scenes guided tours of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and other New York institutions, signed copies of books by Bryn Mawr authors such as Francine du Plessix Gray, fine wines, stylish home accessories, and don't forget tutoring sessions for the standardized test of your choice GRE/GMAT/LSAT. A Sotheby's auctioneer will run the live auction, and a silent auction will run throughout the evening. We are still seeking volunteers to pick up auction donations before the day, auction set up and take down on April 17 and auction administrators to run the tables with the items for silent auction. Bryn Mawr Book Club

On Monday, February 19, Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss The Lake, the River & the Other Lake by Steve Amick.

Edited review from MADreads, the web site of the Madison (Wisconsin) Public Library web site:

The cover of The Lake, the River & the Other Lake has a detailed sketch of the fictional town of Weneshkeen, Michigan by author Steve Amick. On it he has marked pretty much everything mentioned in the book, from the radioactive, decaying lighthouse to the house of the “Fat guy who screams at his kids.”  He shows the Oh-John-Ninny River that connects the Great Lake with Lake Meenigeesis , names that derive from Ojibwe words. And hence the title.  Amick has created a charming ensemble cast to populate this tiny backwater where nothing and everything happens over one summer.  Roger Drinkwater, a 7/8ths Ojibwe (the other eighth is Polish), is a Vietnam vet who lives on Meenigeesis and uses his SEAL skills to wage a war on the jet skis brought in by summer residents.  Eugene Reecher, is a preacher who has just lost his wife, and who, at the urging of his kids, learns how to email.  Janey Struska, a deputy sheriff passed over in a bid for sheriff by an outsider, believes rumors that David Letterman is coming to town and imagines impressing him with her humor and nailing a job writing for him. Amick has done a marvelous job finding the humor and humanity in each character and their interactions.  This book has been compared to Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon Days, but the character’s stories are even more poignant and moving—a very fun, engaging novel.

WHAT: Discussion of The Lake, the River & the Other Lake by Steve Amick
WHEN: Monday, February 19
7:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Home of Jim Kafadar and Elizabeth Holloway

Bryn Mawr Connections on the Horizon

Curating at a Teaching Institution
(Smith College Club of New York City Event Open to Graduates of All Seven Sisters)

Linda Muehlig, Curator of Painting and Sculpture and Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Smith College Museum of Art, will speak on curating at a teaching art museum, specifically:
  • How do college museums mesh academic needs with those of the public?
  • How does this affect collecting and exhibitions?
  • How are collecting priorities set?
  • How does a small museum respond to the increasingly global curriculum of its institution?
  • How are visitors made to feel welcome?

Linda came to Smith as a National Endowment for the Arts intern in 1976.  Co-organizer of the nationally touring mid-career retrospective of the work of Sandy Skoglund, Reality Under Siege, Linda has organized many exhibitions and site-specific installations during her tenure at Smith.  These include the exhibitions American Spectrum and Corot to Picasso and, most recently, Undomesticated Interiors, an exhibition of contemporary art that challenges traditional ideas of the domestic environment as a familial refuge. She was the editor and a principal author of the collection catalogue Masterworks of American Painting and Sculpture from the Smith College Museum of Art  and co-author of Master Drawings from the Smith College Museum of Art.
