Director
of the Bryn Mawr College Hepburn Center, Leslie Rescorla,
Speaks to the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City, February
10
-
We all remember Katharine Hepburn, Class of 1928,
yes? Come hear how Bryn Mawr honors her
work as a four-time Oscar winner and “yar” woman, and the
work of her mother, Katherine Houghton Hepburn, Class of
1899, who was among the first reproductive rights activists
and pretty yar herself. The ideals of these strong
women come together in the Katharine Houghton Hepburn
Center, the focus of exciting and high-profile
activity at the College today. Director of the Center, Leslie Rescorla, Bryn Mawr
College Professor of Psychology, will speak with New York
area alumnae on Tuesday, February 10 about the Center’s
current activities and future plans. The Center
focuses on three broad areas: film and theater, civic
engagement and women's health, through three core
programming elements:
- The Hepburn Fellows Program, which
brings to campus extraordinary women who work in one of the
three areas of the Center's mission;
-
Summer internships that
enable Bryn Mawr students to partner with individuals who
have demonstrated leadership in film and theater, civic
engagement or women's health; and
- The Hepburn Medal, which
recognizes women who have attained distinction in any of
these three areas.
A special focus of Professor
Rescorla's remarks will be her initiatives to provide
undergraduates with practical, real-world experience
relevant to possible career paths by connecting them with
alumnae whose work focusses on one of the Center's three
mission areas.
-
RSVPs are required and photo
identification will be needed to attend the event which will be held at Con
Edison Headquarters. A $10 admission fee will be
collected at the door. Special thanks go to Barbara Carey,
'68, for hosting Professor Rescorla's talk and donating the
space for this event.

NYC Seven Sisters Career Panel
(February 12) EVENT FULL
-
The Seven Sisters networking event and career panel scheduled for February 12 is now full with a waiting list. We hope to work with the other clubs to hold another career development event soon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Locations, Locations, Locations; Club Needs Event Venues!
The top three requirements for Bryn
Mawr Club of New York City events! The Club is
constantly planning events for alumnae in the New York City
area, some small and intimate—such as the recent Lizard tea,
which attracted ten attendees— some large, such as
Professor Leslie Rescorla's upcoming speech
on February 10, and still others on a grand scale—such as
the Career Development Committee's annual bi-college
networking extravaganza which typically draws up to 100
people. The solid prerequisite for any event,
is, however, a location at which to hold it. The Club
is constantly on the hunt for donated or low-cost locations
for events. Please give serious thought to whether you
could sponsor a large event at your office or even a
smaller event in your apartment. You will enjoy it and
get many Anassa katas! If you or someone you know is
willing to host an event, or if you have any suggestions, please contact Kristen Steiner at kristenbsteiner@gmail.com and Lissa Wolfe, '95, Event Coordinator, at michner@gmail.com.

New York Wellesley Club Roundtable Discussion: What if Roe Fell? (February 3)
- Suzanne Stoltz, Wellesley, '99, a reproductive rights lawyer, will discuss women's reproductive rights in the U.S., why we still need to have this discussion after the election and inauguration, and what would happen if Roe v. Wade were overturned. The basis for the discussion will be the Center for Reproductive Rights' "What if Roe Fell?” report. Another Center lawyer will be there to help facilitate the discussion. This is the first in a series of roundtable discussions that will provide a small group venue to allow everyone to engage in the topic and conversation.

Bryn Mawr Book Club
Discusses Persepolis
by Marjane Satrapi, February
17
-
On Tuesday,
February 17, at 7:00 p.m., the Bryn Mawr Book Club will
discuss Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi's graphic
memoir about growing up in post-revolutionary Iran.
From the Pantheon Graphic Novels web page on Satrapi and her
work:
Chances are that if you are an
American you know very little about the 1979 Iranian
Revolution. "This revolution was normal, and it had to
happen," says Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis,
a totally unique memoir about growing up in Iran after the
Shah left power. "Unfortunately, it happened in a country
where people were very traditional, and other countries only
saw the religious fanatics who made their response public." In
her graphic novel, Satrapi, shows readers that these images do
not make up the whole story about Iran. Originally published
to wide critical acclaim in France, where it elicited
comparisons to Art Spiegelman's Maus,
Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi's wise, funny, and
heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic
Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images,
Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to
fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime,
the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating
effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only
child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one
of Iran's last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood
uniquely entwined with the history of her country.
