Women and Politics
2006: Not the Usual Election (March 27)
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend introduced by Harriet Tamen, '69

The elections of fall 2006 will affirm the current action or change the direction this country will take. Who will be defining the key issues?  Who will make policy; who will carry it out?  Who will make the decisions?   While more than 50% of the population is female, disgracefully only 25% of elected officials are women.   It is crucial to vote, yes, but what are the other ways to participate?

Harriet Tamen, '69, knows how things are, can, and should be done in politics, from the caucuses of Iowa to the boardrooms of New York City.  An attorney and political activist, she was Co-Chair of Lawyers for Hillary Clinton in 2000 and is also the current Co-Chair for the 2006 campaign.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend knows U.S. politics as few do.  She was the first woman elected Maryland's Lieutenant Governor, was appointed U.S. Deputy Assistant Attorney General, founded the Maryland Student Service Alliance, and was campaign manager for Senator Edward M. Kennedy's re-election bid in 1982.  She is currently Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, Chairman of the Board of Advisors, Institute for Human Virology at the University of Maryland, on the board of several institutions, member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Chairman of the Board of the RFK Memorial organization.  She and her husband, a professor at St. John's College in Annapolis, have four daughters.

Bryn Mawr Book Club

The next book club meeting is Monday, March 6, to discuss The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (all seven books).

From "anonymous" on www.sffworld.com:

"Written at the same time as The Lord of the Rings, and just as essential (and good!), though different. We begin with four siblings who find the fairy-tale-ish land of Narnia through a wardrobe. Throughout the series, main characters drop off and are replaced, and ages pass (Narnia time). Book five breaks up the chronology of the series, taking place during Book one. The last two books take us to the very beginning of Narnia, and then to the very end. Each book is as creative as the next, extremely well-written (they are classics!), and coming full circle, it is perfect."

WHAT: Discussion of The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (all seven books)
WHEN:  Monday, March 6
7:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Elizabeth Holloway, '86
350 Bleecker Street, Apt 6E (ring buzzer no.35 if doorman is on break)
(between Charles and 10th Street)
New York, NY 10014

The April selection is Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara, date TBA, and the selection for May is I Claudius by Robert Graves, date TBA

Housesitter/petsitter/subletter available in March/April
My apartment in Brooklyn is having some pretty serious work done to it in the next couple of months, so I am looking to stay elsewhere for at least part of that time.  If you or someone you know will be away for any part of the next two months and could use a housesitter or petsitter, let's talk.  Please write me on doncherryfan@gmail.com.
