------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Events Pre-Auction Volunteer and Preview Party You’ve marked the date for the gala (April 17), but first
there’s a pre-party to build the enthusiastic team that will run
it. More than a dozen alumnae have already sent in their
RSVPs;
we need more to round out the crew. Join
us for good food, drink and cheer as Team Bryn Mawr comes
together. Volunteers on the day of the event will
attend without charge. We need volunteers for the following activities:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From Grape to Glass: Exploring Wine and the Wine Industry Join the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City at the Italian Culinary Institute to hear and taste the story of the wine industry today. The cast of experts will include Paolo Villoresi, animating spirit of the Italian Culinary Institute and many publications on Italian cooking, renowned Italian winemaker Alberto Marchetto, now with U.S. producer Cap*Rock Winery, Kevin Davis, partner in Palo Duro Wine Partners, and a representative of Padania Wines, an expanding distributor of Italian wines in the U.S. There will be a mini-demonstration of how wine is produced. A producer and distributor will describe their respective parts in wine's journey to your glass. The evening will feature an extensive sampling with expert comment on a number of wines from Italy, the U.S. and other parts of the world. Paolo Villoresi Few people know Italy like Paolo Villoresi, Editor-in-Chief of the magazines Italian Cooking & Living, The Magazine of La Cucina Italiana and Cibo. A native of Florence and connoisseur of Italian cuisine, he has shared his enthusiasm and insider knowledge on Italy through the TV series Italian Cooking & Living on the American Life Network. Alberto Marchetto Alberto Marchetto is from Vicenza and started his career analyzing Italian terroir for the planting and growing of varietal grapes. He became the winemaker at Borgo Rocca Sveva, Cantina di Soave in 2003, with his wines winning prizes at such competitions as the International Wine Challenge, the Concorso Enologico Verona Top Wines, and the Vinitaly Wine Competition. He joined Cap*Rock Winery in February 2007. Spaces are still available for this event; RSVP soon. Reservations are available only by check payment as described below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Events on the Horizon Gala Fundraising Party and AuctionTuesday, April 17, 2007 You will receive your invitations soon for the New York Bryn Mawr community’s biggest event, the Gala Fundraising Party and Auction, when we all come together to meet old friends, make new ones and maintain the momentum of the Club’s fundraising efforts, including establishing a New York City Bookshop/Bookspace to support the purposes of the Club and the College. Please consider what you can contribute to the cause, your time (see above for the volunteer pre-auction party) or interesting, valuable goods for the silent and live auctions. Donations continue to come in, but we need your donated items with a realistic value of at least $100 that people will compete to buy. We want you and everyone to find interesting and useful items at the auction. Watch your mailbox for the Club’s newsletter, which includes a printed donor form. To make a donation, please contact Tanya Doughty Olyphant, ’70, Auction Chair, at tolyphant@aol.com or 212 570 9885 for more information and to receive a Donor Form by email. The donations are coming in but we need more to make the gala a spectacular success. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bryn Mawr Connections The Art of Sheila Isham, '50, at the Walter Wickiser GallerySheila Isham will be having an exhibition of paintings from her Oasis Series, not seen since her Retrospective show in St. Petersburg in 2004, at the Walter Wickiser Gallery March 3 through 28. ARTEK has gained a reputation for exciting, dramatic performances of baroque music. There will be drinks and hors d'oeuvres at 7:00, music at 7:30 (with wineglasses in hand), and a delicious dinner and dessert to follow—a delightful evening on the Upper West Side. Nahma hosts this event annually to benefit ARTEK, New York's premier early music ensemble. The requested minimum donation is $100.00, which is tax deductible. This year's proceeds go to ARTEK's upcoming performance of Monteverdi's opera "L'Orfeo" at Symphony Space. Nahma’s living room is comfortable, but it does fill up, so please RSVP soon.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn
Mawr Book Club From www.reviewsofbooks.com: Case
Histories revolve around
three family tragedies:a disappearance of
a young girl, a man sees
his daughter murdered, and a wife takes an axe to her husband. More than a decade later, private detective
Jackson Brodie gets involved investigating some aspect of all three
cases. As he delves further into each one,
he
uncovers family secrets perhaps left behind unopened doors. Brodie must deal with his own family troubles
while discovering the actions and violence that tears others asunder.
The New
Zealand Herald says, ‘Although Case
Histories feels almost like a
detective
novel, it's more than that. Not every case is solved neatly by the end,
but
Atkinson does present an entertaining tale—sometimes shocking,
sometimes
laughable—of how our lives intertwine and actions reverberate.’
The selection for April is His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik, date TBD.
Even if you can't attend Bryn Mawr Book Club, reading suggestions are always welcome—just send me an email. Elizabeth Holloway, robinsonholloway@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------Musicians from Marlboro Special discount tickets for Seven Sisters alumnae. "The secret was a sense of joy" were the words one Chicago critic used to describe Musicians from Marlboro. The March program, a huge success on their national tour last season, offers two of chamber music's greatest works: the Brahms Horn Trio and the Ravel String Quartet in F. Putting them in wonderful perspective are the fresh and striking ideas of Pulitzer-Prize-winning John Harbison's Twilight Music for horn, violin and piano and Stravinsky's spiky six-minute Concertino for String Quartet.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn Mawr Connections on the Horizon Alison Baker, '62, reads from her new book It's Good to Be a Woman: Voices from Bryn Mawr, Class of ’62, to be published March 31. It's Good to Be a Woman
tells the stories of a group of
women who came out of Bryn Mawr College determined to
have lives of
their own, to find meaningful work, to make a difference. Follow these
stubborn, can-do optimists as they navigate the turbulence of the
sixties and
early seventies, confront crisis (divorce, sickness, getting fired),
and build
lives and careers, charting new territory for women in the professions. It's Good To
Be a Woman is Alison Baker's
second book, following Voices of
Resistance: Oral Histories of Moroccan Women.
