ALICE RIVLIN, '52 TO ADDRESS BMC CLUB ANNUAL MEETING

Alice M. Rivlin, former cabinet member and scholar, Federal Reserve vice chair and author, MacArthur Foundation "genius" fellow and Bryn Mawr alumna, will address the Annual Meeting of the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City on Tuesday evening, May 13, 2008. Currently a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, where she previously directed the Economic Studies Program, Dr. Rivlin is an expert on fiscal, monetary and social policy and urban issues. Her direct experience at the highest levels of government, where policy and politics converge, makes her a particularly appropriate speaker for a year of economic uncertainty and national elections.

A member of the BMC Class of 1952, Dr. Rivlin earned her Ph.D. at Harvard. She was appointed Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare by President Johnson; became the founding Director of the Congressional Budget Office; and served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton Administration. With an illustrious career in government and academia, Dr. Rivlin is renowned for her public service, her expertise and her pithy commentary. The New York Times once characterized her in headlines as a "blunt talker on budget and deficits," a description confirmed by her lively commentary on public affairs on PBS, Bloomberg and other networks. She has taught at Harvard, Georgetown, George Mason, and New School Universities, has served on the Boards of Directors of several corporations, and as President of the American Economic Association.

Please watch for information about venue and other details in next month's e-letter.

Bryn Mawr Connections

Bryn Mawr Book Club

On Thursday, March 27, the Book Club will discuss The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky.  The Brothers Karamazov was Dostoyevsky's last novel and is widely considered his masterpiece and the culmination of his life's work.  The plot follows the story of the four Karamazov brothers, who share varying degrees of complicity for the brutal murder of their despicable father.  Dostoevsky's grand epic grapples with the moral and spiritual struggle between faith and doubt, destiny and free will.  Sigmund Freud called The Brothers Karamazov "the most magnificent novel ever written" and it was reportedly the favorite book of Albert Einstein who once said "Dostoevsky gives me more than any scientist." (The novel is 800 pages long, so start early!)

Scan the Skies at the Hayden Planetarium with BMC Professor Elizabeth McCormack

On Sunday, April 13, the Bryn Mawr Club of NYC welcomes BMC Physics Professor Elizabeth McCormack to New York City for a tour of the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History.  The tour will be led by a Museum guide and will be followed by a reception at which Professor McCormack will provide commentary and take questions from tour group members.

The Rose Center for Earth and Space features the Hayden Planetarium, the Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth, the Cullman Hall of the Universe and the Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway. The Planetarium is the most technologically advanced Space Theater in existence and the largest and most powerful virtual reality simulator in the world. The bottom half of the Hayden Sphere showcases the Big Bang, transporting visitors to the beginning of time and space for a dramatic, multi-sensory re-creation of the first moments of the universe. From there, the tour follows the Cosmic Pathway - a sloping walkway that takes them through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution to the halls of Planet Earth and the Universe.

An Evening With Alexandra Enders, '86, Author of the Novel Bride Island

"Bride Island is a strong and beautiful book, full of the power and beauty of the Maine coast and the power and beauty of the family. Enders has a compelling voice, a meticulously observant eye and a deep understanding of the world of emotional engagement. This is an impressive debut."
   - Roxana Robinson, author of Sweetwater and This is My Daughter

Join Alexandra Enders and other alumnae to discuss her first novel, Bride Island, on Thursday, April 24.  Bride Island, published in 2007, has garnered positive reviews and growing word of mouth for its striking portrayal of a woman struggling to reconcile her relationship to her past and future while salvaging her family's heritage.

After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Alexandra worked in New York as a magazine editor and writer and then received an MFA in Writing from Vermont College in 2000. She has also published stories in BOMB, Hunger Mountain and Critical Quarterly. She lives in Tribeca and Maine with her husband, daughter, and dachshund.
