ALICE RIVLIN, '52, TO ADDRESS BMC CLUB ANNUAL MEETING
-
Alice M. Rivlin, former cabinet member and scholar, Federal Reserve vice chair and author, MacArthur Foundation "genius" fellow and Bryn Mawr alumna, will address the Annual Meeting of the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City on Tuesday evening, May 13, 2008. Currently a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, where she previously directed the Economic Studies Program, Dr. Rivlin is an expert on fiscal, monetary, and social policy, and urban issues. Her direct experience at the highest levels of government, where policy and politics converge, makes her a particularly appropriate speaker for a year of economic uncertainty and national elections.
A member of the BMC Class of 1952, Dr. Rivlin earned her Ph.D. at Harvard. She was appointed Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare by President Johnson; became the founding Director of the Congressional Budget Office; and served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton Administration. With an illustrious career in government and academia, Dr. Rivlin is renowned for her public service, her expertise, and her pithy commentary. The New York Times once characterized her in headlines as a "blunt talker on budget and deficits," a description borne out by her lively commentary on public affairs on PBS, Bloomberg, and other networks. She has taught at Harvard, Georgetown, George Mason, and New School Universities; has served on the Boards of Directors of several corporations; and as President of the American Economic Association.
The Annual Meeting will be held at the Cornell Club, 6 East 44th Street (at Fifth Avenue) at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. To reserve your space, contact Virginia Kassel at virkassel@aol.com virkassel@aol.com or 212-860-4025 as soon as possible. There is no charge to attend for alumnae; a limited number of spaces will be made available for non-alumnae guests at a charge of $20.

Bryn Mawr College Today and
Tomorrow with Professor Elizabeth
McCormack
Curious about President-elect Jane Damen-McAuliffe?
Never understood how Bryn Mawr's "interdisciplinary
approach" fits with the classic liberal arts
curriculum? Wondering about developments in the department
you majored in? Shocked that there are no more
co-ed dorms? Shocked that there ever were
co-ed dorms in the first place? Want to know what's happening
at Bryn Mawr today? Join the Bryn Mawr
Club of New York City at the
Culture Center on Manhattan's Upper West
Side as we gather to hear Physics
Professor Elizabeth McCormack, Chair of the General Faculty, report on ongoing
developments at Bryn Mawr and plans for the College's future. Professor McCormack served on the presidential search committee
as well as the task force on curriculum development.
She will address recent changes in Bryn Mawr's curriculum and place them
in the context of the evolution of American academia as a
whole, as well as answer any questions you may
have about happenings on campus. Many changes
are afoot, yet Bryn Mawr's spirit and mission remain the same.
Come reconnect with the College and meet
up with old friends and new for what promises to be
an interesting
and informative discussion. We expect a good crowd and a
warm welcome for Professor McCormack, so please RSVP soon.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Visit
Bride Island With Alexandra Enders,
'86
"Bride Island is a strong and beautiful
book, full of the power and beauty of the Maine coast and the
power and beauty of the family. Enders has a compelling voice,
a meticulously observant eye and a deep understanding of the
world of emotional engagement. This is an impressive debut."
- Roxana Robinson,
author of Sweetwater and This is My
Daughter
Take an unforgettable emotional and
spiritual journey to Bride Island
with author and Bryn Mawr alumna Alexandra Enders on
Thursday, April 24. Published in 2007,
Alexandra's first novel Bride Island has
garnered positive reviews and strong word of mouth as a result
of its striking portrayal of a woman struggling to reconcile her
relationship to her past and future while salvaging her family's heritage
which is irrevocably linked to an island off the coast
of Maine.
After graduating from Bryn Mawr in
1986, Alexandra worked in New York as a magazine editor and
writer and then received an MFA in Writing from Vermont College
in 2000. She has published stories in BOMB, Hunger Mountain
and Critical Quarterly. She lives in Tribeca and Maine with
her husband, daughter, and dachshund.
Elizabeth Holloway, '86, will host at

Rosi Amador, '81, and
Sol y Canto Perform at DROM in Alphabet City
If you love Latin music, then you'll want to check out Rosi Amador,'81,
who will be performing with her Latin band Sol y Canto
on Saturday, April 5 at DROM, an eclectic club in the Alphabet
City section of the East Village, which offers the best in world
music as well as a yummy array of exotic international
food and drink. As a typical over-achieving Bryn
Mawr alumna, Rosi not only sings in a "crystalline voice"
but also plays the bongos. She is joined by
her husband Brian Amador who plays a "lush" Spanish guitar
and other outstanding Latin musicians who hail from
Uruguay, Peru, Panama, and Argentina. Sol y Canto has
performed at many prestigious venues, including the White
House, the Kennedy Center, the Boston Symphony, and the
Newport Folk Festival. Don't miss your opportunity to
see them in person-- and if you do attend, be sure to say hi

The Blue Hill Troupe
Performs Gilbert and Sullivan
Here's an opportunity for musical
theater fans to catch a great performance of
a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta while supporting the Seven Sisters
community and doing your part for charity.
The Blue Hill Troupe, whose members include
many Seven Sisters alumnae, will be performing Princess Ida,
or Castle Adamant on Wednesday, April 9 at the Teatro
Hecksher at El Museo del Barrio. Appropriately enough, the heroine of Princess
Ida runs a women's university; it's the perfect show for
a Bryn Mawr audience. And you'll
have a chance to connect with fellow Seven Sisters alumnae
at a pre-show cocktail reception.
The Blue Hill Troupe is New York City's oldest
performing Gilbert and Sullivan society but boasts a broad
repertoire that includes Broadway musicals and
light opera. All proceeds are donated to charity; since
1928, Troupers have raised almost $3 million for
city charities while wowing New York audiences
with their legendarily festive performances of musical
theater classics.

Bryn Mawr Book Club
On Tuesday, April 29 the Book
Club will discuss Zuleika Dobson, a satire
of undergraduate life at Oxford first published in 1911 and
the only novel ever written by renowned
English critic and caricaturist Max Beerbohm. The
book's eponymous heroine is the quintessential femme fatale
who, after charming her way into the all-male domain of Judas
College, leads her scholarly admirers one by one
to suicide while the university's faculty barely notice
the steady depletion of the student body. Zuleika
Dobson is filled with witty one-liners worthy of
Beerbohm's literary contemporary and fellow social critic
Oscar Wilde: The first undergraduate to succumb to
Zuleika's attractions manages to utter "Death cancels all
engagements" before keeling over, the victim of his own
unrequited desires.
