June 2005 E-LetterPresident's ColumnReport on Annual Meeting, March 23, 2005 Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Events

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From Club President, Lisa Tomeny, ‘91 Greetings to all as we get ready to enjoy the warmer summer weather! The Bryn Mawr Club of New York City spent this past year continuing our efforts to build a community amongst alumnae in the New York City area. The Club hosted a number of events, with topics including the presidential race, corporate and non-profit board governance, rose arrangement, and venture capitalism – just to name a few. As we continue to line up events throughout the 2005-2006 year, we hope that many of you will take advantage of the opportunities to hear interesting speakers and connect and re-connect with fellow alumnae. A continuing priority for the Club during 2004-2005 is the effort to re-establish a bookshop presence. The envisioned bookspace would follow in the footsteps of its predecessor by providing a means to contribute to the BMC undergraduate scholarship fund. We continue to make progress on this front with a gala Auction Event planned for October 20, 2005 at the Cosmopolitan Club! Mark your calendars – it will be an event you won’t want to miss!! (see Club Event item below) Current information of the Club’s activities can always be found on our website, which is accessible through the BMC website (www.brynmawr.edu) by clicking on the alumnae gateway. We are always striving to sponsor events to help connect the local BMC community, so please do not hesitate to contact us with event suggestions or comments. We will also continue sending you monthly e-letters, so write to us with any information you would like to post, events, listings, or other news (bmc_club_of_nyc@hotmail.com). Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you at events throughout
this Lisa Tomeny ‘91 Lisa Tomeny, President, called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. She thanked Nora Lavori for providing the Culture Center for this meeting. Lisa explained that the Club’s primary mission is to raise funds for the College’s scholarship fund. This year, the Board decided to contribute $5,000 to the scholarship fund. Since the demise of the Bryn Mawr Bookshop in New York City, the Club has been raising money from events and dues, but Board has spent the past year brainstorming on a new bookshop. Ann Schack reported on the efforts of the Auction Committee to organize an event to raise funds for a new bookshop on October 20, 2005 at the Cosmopolitan Club. This will be a silent and live auction with a target of about 200 attendees. The committee is currently seeking donations of goods and services to be auctioned, as well as volunteers to help organize the event (see Club Event item below). The Club Treasurer’s Report is available on the Club website.
The meeting did not
reach quorum on the day, but proxies received after March 23 yielded
quorum. The minutes from the 2004 annual meeting were accepted. Lisa then introduced the guest speaker, Beth Leibson-Hawkins (’86), who discussed her experiences in writing her book, I’m Too Young to Have Breast Cancer, about women under age 40 who have had breast cancer. The meeting was adjourned.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Bryn Mawr Club of New York City is organizing an enormous, exciting gala party to launch the fundraising effort for a Bryn Mawr bookspace in New York. We hope to establish a self-supporting venue where we can meet to exchange ideas, celebrate our talents and indulge our love of book bargains. This will not be easy. We need $ 350,000 to lease, renovate and operate the space for a significant period until our income will pay the rent. That figure may dismay some of us who remember our earlier venture – a largely volunteer effort. But times – and women’s lives – have changed. We must pay rent for a desirable location and competitive salaries for professional management. Our first fundraising effort will be an auction of alumnae goods and services. Auctions have proved successful for other organizations and we hope this will become an enjoyable and lucrative tradition for us. We are especially pleased that Caroline Willis ’66 — an expert in rare books and auctioneering — will be spurring us on in the ballroom of the Cosmopolitan Club. To donate an item or your talent to be auctioned, please contact Ann Schack at aschack@bellatlantic.net or 212 929 2830, and we will send you a donor form (those of you who have already volunteered donations will receive forms shortly). Please also let Ann know whether you will be available to help with preparations during the summer or early fall. Please be generous and imaginative: your grandmother’s Ming vase, your consulting services, a weekend in your vacation cottage or, of course, your money. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by IRS regulations.
Rebecca Kelly Ballet From Rebecca Kelly, '73 and Craig Brashear H'ford '73:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The June selection is 'Riding the Bus with My Sister' by Rachel Simon, BMC '81. Edited excerpt from www.reviewsofbooks.com: Recently made into a TV movie starring Andie McDowell and Rosie O’Donnell, Rachel Simon’s book is a memoir of the year she spent riding the bus with her mentally retarded sister, Beth, who, to combat the isolation of living alone and striving to maintain her independence while finding a community where she can interact, had taken to riding the buses in her city in Pennsylvania all day. One day she asked Rachel, a writer and college teacher, to spend a year riding the buses with her. Rachel not only discovered the compassion, friendship, and mentoring provided to Beth by the drivers and regular commuters, but she also reconnected with her sister and found deeper meaning in her own emotionally isolated life. Receiving praise from all quarters, the Rocky Mountain News called Riding the Bus with my Sister “authentic and impressive, an enriching story of reconciliation and rediscovery.”
ATTENTION: The July meeting will be early in the month, Wednesday, July 6, at Elizabeth Holloway’s apartment and will focus on 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams. If you have been searching endlessly for the answer to life, the universe and everything, this is it, read up! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------Personals Housing
