Professor Elliott Shore addresses the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City on
Teaching and Learning at Today's Bryn Mawr:  Blending together traditional and new technologies

To Marianne Rutter, ’74, former President of the Alumnae Association, he “really ‘gets it.’” For Rhonda Newton, ’90, his “mini class…made me want to go back to college!” Megan Mendillo, ’01, writes that, “The genuine intellectual curiosity that he exhibited and fostered in his class has had a lasting effect on me.” And Elizabeth Brettschneider, ’01, an immigration attorney, says “I can honestly say that his class inspired me in my career choice, and for that I will always be grateful.”

Professor Elliott Shore has had a powerful influence on Bryn Mawr students, alumnae, and the College itself. As Constance A. Jones Director of Libraries and Professor of History and as Chief Information Officer of Bryn Mawr College, he understands and leads the College in, as Marianne Rutter, ’74, puts it, “how the printed word is changing in ways that make traditional notions of library and archive at once both obsolete AND perhaps the most exciting arena for growth in today's academic environment.”

Bryn Mawr Book Club

On Thurday, June 15, Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss The Plot Against America by Philip Roth.

Jana L. Perskie writing on mostlyfiction.com:
Alternate history, is the exercise of looking at the past and asking "what if?" What if some major historical event had gone differently? How might the world have been changed? Ultimately, alternate history is the road not taken. Philip Roth's novel, The Plot Against America, is based on the premise that in the 1940 U.S. presidential election, last minute Republican candidate Charles Lindbergh defeats Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Imagine!! Roth, the author, has imagined, and his result is both brilliant and mind boggling—an extraordinary, bone chilling story, beautifully written. This is, at least partially, an autobiographical novel. The subject is fear—fear and anxiety so sharp the reader can smell it, almost taste it—a boy's fear, and that of the Roth family's of Newark, NJ, their neighbors' and community's. It is also a love story. I have rarely read fiction where the writer pours so much love onto the page—especially for his parents and brother. Herman Roth, Philip's father, is the book's hero, and Bess, his mother shines as the ultimate Jewish heroine, "whose worth is far above rubies."
WHAT: Discussion of The Plot Against America by Philip Roth
WHEN:  Thursday, June 15
7:00 p.m.
WHERE:  Elizabeth Holloway
