The Bryn Mawr Book Club Discusses Selections from Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings by Jorge Luis Borges, July 7

On Monday, July 7, the Book Club will meet at the home of Elizabeth Holloway to discuss selections from Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings by Jorge Luis Borges. The Club will be reading three short stories from the anthology: The Library of Babel; The Circular Ruins; and Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote. If you don't own the anthology, the three stories are available free online. Click on the following links:

From Amazon.com:
If Jorge Luis Borges had been a computer scientist, he probably would have invented hypertext and the World Wide Web. Instead, being a librarian and one of the world's most widely read people, he became the leading practitioner of a densely layered imaginistic writing style that has been imitated throughout this century but has no peer (although Umberto Eco sometimes comes close, especially in The Name of the Rose). Borges's stories are redolent with an intelligence, wealth of invention, and a tight, almost mathematically formal style that challenge with mysteries and paradoxes revealed only slowly after several readings. Highly recommended to anyone who wants her imagination and intellect to be aswarm with philosophical plots, compelling conundrums and a wealth of real and imagined literary references derived from an infinitely imaginary library.

Bryn Mawr Mothers Group, Inaugural Meeting, August 2

A new alumnae group is forming out of the Finding Your Way as a Mother events held this past spring. The Bryn Mawr Mothers Group will get together monthly to discuss and commune on the issues surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, infants, toddlers, and children of all ages. We're hoping to harness the diversity of experience of Mawrters to share non-judgmental support and conversation that cuts through the layers of mother-rhetoric. Bryn Mawr alumnae will be the core of the group, but other mothers are welcome; so reach out to others and bring your friends. The group will meet at the home of Nancy Kirk, '59, on the Upper East Side on Saturday afternoons; lap babies are welcome. The initial group meeting will be August 2; light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Nancy at NancyKirk9@aol.com.
