Bryn Mawr Connections

Bryn Mawr Book Club

On Tuesday, August 21, the Book Club will discuss Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor, a return to the Book Club's "trashy novels of yesteryear" summer series.

Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England—that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. Frequently compared to Gone with the Wind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s—despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness.

A sampling of reviews from Amazon.com:

Bertrice Small
"The first real historical romance. This is the book that started it all for me!"

New York Times May 28, 2003
"Miss Winsor could justifiably claim to be the woman who invented the modern best seller."

Los Angeles Times May 31, 2003
"A prototype for the modern blockbuster."

Bryn Mawr Connections on the Horizon

Alexandra Enders, '86, reads from her new novel, Bride Island

Alexandra Enders, '86, will be reading from her recently published novel, Bride Island, on Thursday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. at BookCourt, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn. BookCourt is located at 163 Court Street between Pacific and Dean. Come out to support Alexandra and celebrate her debut as a novelist.

From a 2007 review in The Library Journal:

Enders is a short story writer whose foray into the novel format makes for a compelling read. Polly Birdswell has worked diligently to separate herself from her alcoholic family and haunting past. She gave up custody of her daughter, Monroe, and moved to coastal Maine in order to get her life together. But Polly's heart belongs to Bride Island, a family retreat off the Maine coast. Its landscape, despite containing only a raggedy old house, invigorates and calms Polly's soul. When her mother decides to sell Bride Island, Polly realizes she must take action and try to claim it. This battle makes Polly move toward regaining custody of Monroe—and regaining trust in and acceptance of herself. From alcoholic families and divorced parenting, all the way to a harrowing family secret, this novel covers a plethora of domestic tribulations. Polly is a truly imperfect person who is trying her hardest to make her life mean something. It's a difficult road and a lovely read.

We need you!  The Bryn Mawr Club of New York City is looking for a few good women to help with the continuing development of the Club’s communications program.  We are especially in need of IT-savvy alumnae with graphic and web design skills to help overhaul the Club website.  We are also looking for individuals who know how to write in HTML code to assist with producing the monthly e-letter. (Having FTP access during the workday would be a big plus.)  We are also seeking a writer to produce a few short articles for the Club’s hard-copy newsletter.

Not only will this be fun, it will also look good on your résumé.  If you are interested in joining our merry band, please contact Bonnie Walker ’91 at bhwalker3@gmail.com.
