Announcement from the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City Career Development Committee

This fall the Club is unveiling its new, improved Career Development Committee under the stewardship of Bryn Mawr alumnae Paula Block Bralow, '84, Ingrid Johnson, '92, Amberine Nagree, '01, and Kwanza Price, '00. The Committee is busy planning its first major event, tentatively scheduled for October, to launch professional affinity groups and to re-launch the Bryn Mawr Career Development Network in New York City. There is a lot of work to do, so the Committee would love to have more volunteers. If you are interested in helping out or have an idea for an event or a venue, e-mail Paula at paulab102@hotmail.com.

Did you know that Athena's Web, the Bryn Mawr alumnae social networking site, offers groups organized by profession for alumnae to join and that alumnae can create their own groups on Athena's Web? Go to https://athenasweb.brynmawr.edu/brynmawr/auth/login. Happy networking!

The Bryn Mawr Book Club Discusses The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, August 6

The Book Club's discussion of The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, the Club's annual summer "trashy novel," has been rescheduled from August 6 to Wednesday, September 3 at 7:00 p.m. and will feature two special guests who have first-hand insights into the publishing and marketing of the novel and the author. Paula Diamond, '58, was Director of Subsidiary Rights at Harper & Row in 1977 and, in her own words, "conducted an obsessive year-long campaign leading up to the pre-publication auction of The Thorn Birds paperback reprint rights for a sum that established a publishing record." Paula will be accompanied by Jim Fox, who, as a lawyer for Harper & Row, took part in the negotiations with Colleen McCullough. Come hear the stories Paula and Jim have to tell and talk about The Thorn Birds, which The Boston Globe described as "the kind of book the word 'blockbuster' was made for."
