------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pre-Party Planning Session You are cordially invited to a pre-party planning session for our October auction and fundraiser. Some of you are already committed to specific tasks at our fundraiser; many of you have indicated that you would like to help, before, during or after the October 20 event. On Wednesday, September 7, we will outline what needs to be done and when. We still need people to manage:
Please ask your classmates to join us at the planning session. We need many people to work on October 20; you will be guests of the Bryn Mawr Club and not expected to pay the admission fee of $50. We are grateful to Nora Lavori for her support of the Bryn Mawr Club of New York in providing the Culture Center as a venue for this (and numerable other Club events); her enthusiasm for this endeavor has been invaluable. There will be wine and hors d'oeuvres to fuel our organizational enthusiasm. Please let Ann Schack know if you will be attending the party on aschack@bellatlantic.net or 646 522 9287. Even if you can't attend this meeting, if you have any thoughts, questions, donations of goods or time, please do contact Ann. The form to donate goods for the auction can be found at http://www.alumnae.brynmawr.edu/newycclub/index.html to download the donor form (in Word).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cocktail Party and Gala Auction We are getting closer to from the Cocktail Party and Auction on October 20 to benefit a Bryn Mawr Bookspace in New York City. You will be receiving your invitation in the mail soon, and we hope that you will RSVP as soon as possible. Donations for the auction are flowing in faster each day (keep them coming!). Recent items donated include some incredible estate jewelry and a set of Yankee's tickets. Think of throw pillows in luxurious red dragon silk brocade from Mary Misner Asian-Inspired Chinese Silk Quilts & Accessories. You can do lunch with Nancy Vickers, President of the College. You can have a renowned landscape architect develop a plan for your garden or terrace. There are many things you will want for yourself, but it's also not too early to think about this as an opportunity to find special gifts for the holidays. We hoped this has both whetted your appetite for the gala auction and also brought to mind what you would like to donate to the auction yourself. Please visit http://www.alumnae.brynmawr.edu/newycclub/index.html to download the donor form (in Word). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Career Network Jumpstart Your Job Search Last call for the Career Network's Résumé and Interview Skills Building Seminar for Bryn Mawr and Haverford alumni-a week from today. Two career development professionals will discuss recruiting and job search strategies: Maria Agostinelli '86, Divisional Vice President, Staffing-Wealth Management at UBS Financial Services and seasoned recruiting officer, and Debbie Becker, professional career counselor in the Career Development Office (CDO) at Bryn Mawr College. There will be time for questions, and don't forget to bring your résumé.

If you are not a New York resident and would like to attend, please register with Nancy Kirk at NancyKirk9@aol.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Career Corner: We need your input! What career events would you attend? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BMC Connections Barbara Porter '71 Lectures for the Month of September We have several last opportunities to hear distinguished archeologist Barbara Porter speak before she leaves New York to take up her appointment as Director of the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman, Jordan. Barbara has held various positions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, taught for several semesters at New York University, and led several Smithsonian and Metropolitan Museum tours to the Near East and excavated in Jordan and Syria.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn Mawr Book Club On September 14 the Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss 'Lady Oracle' by Margaret Atwood. Edited review from Books@Random: Margaret Atwood's third novel, 'Lady Oracle' a comic masterpiece, parodying literary forms and subverting literary expectations. Heroine Joan Fosterhas has spent her life on the run, albeit quietly; adolescent obesity and the constant criticisms of her disapproving mother inspire her to flee to England. She then begins to find her own voice through her pseudonymous career as a romance novelist, which she hides from Arthur, her manic-depressive, revolution-hungry husband. When Joan's writing finds its ultimate expression in a collection of feminist poetry that becomes the sleeper hit of the country, the sudden rush of publicity and notoriety overwhelms her. Unable to juggle her crumbling marriage, her madcap affair with an unpredictable performance artist, and her feud with an insidious celebrity blackmailer, Joan feigns her own death and flees to Italy, determined to start over incognito but, well, fails.
Sarah Jones '95 Reads as Part of "Voices of A People's History of the United States: Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove" Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove are joined by Wally Shawn, Brian Jones, Christina Kirk, and Sarah Jones for an evening of dramatic readings from Voices of a People's History of the United States, the companion volume of Zinn's People's History. Sarah Jones is an Obie Award-winning playwright, actor, and poet. She attended Bryn Mawr, then returned to her native New York and began writing and performing. Called "a master of the genre" by The New York Times, Jones and her solo shows "Surface Transit," "Women Can't Wait," and "Bridge and Tunnel," have garnered numerous honors, including a Helen Hayes Award, HBO's Comedy Arts Festival's Best One Person Show Award, and two Drama Desk nominations. Jones recently made history by suing the FCC for its ban of her celebrated poem/song " Your Revolution," and eventually forced reversal of the censorship. She is currently at work with her partner Steve Colman on preparation to move "Bridge and Tunnel" to Broadway this spring.
