Bryn Mawr Service Day at God’s Love We Deliver: A
Challenge to Bryn Mawr Club of New York City
God's Love We Deliver improves the health and well-being of men, women
and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses
by alleviating hunger and malnutrition by preparing and delivering,
free of charge, nutritious, high-quality meals to people who, because
of their illness are unable to provide or prepare meals for themselves.
The agency delivers over 2,400 meals every day of the week, year round.
To date, GLWD has delivered over six million meals to clients in New
York City and Hudson County, New Jersey.
A Bryn Mawr undergraduate spearheaded the campaign to have a Bryn Mawr
service day at God's Love We Deliver, and we in New York need to step
up. We still need volunteers to join the undergraduates that will
be donating a day of their Fall Break. The first five alumnae
responding will team with the undergrads from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on
Sunday October 15.

"Kierstin Gray is a storyteller who, like the rhythm and blues, jazz,
and soul artists who have influenced her music, is able to weave yarns
between the bars of her songs that run the range of emotions—from the
vulnerability that a true and open love brings to making it through
life's rougher moments."

Bryn
Mawr Book Club
The next book club meeting on Thursday, October
26, will discuss the short story The
Nose by Nikolai Gogol.
Ah, Russians
in St. Petersburg, all doom and gloom and drowning in
vodka, you say. The less than lighthearted Dostoyevsky, the not
exactly upbeat Brodsky, not a comic in the bunch. You thought
wrong; meet Nikolai Gogol, humorist, who was on to magical realism
before it was a twinkle in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ eye. In
The Nose by Gogol, a pathetic barber discovers that his nose has
detached from his face. When he attempts to advertise his lost
proboscis in the classifieds, the newspaper rejects the claim, calling
it "absurd." The nose remains literally and figuratively impossible to
reattach. Check it out.

The November selection is Lords
of Poverty by Graham Hancock (this book suggestion came from
Elizabeth Arend, Book Club regular, now following Book Club activities
from Dire Dawa, Ethiopia), date TBD but definitely during the week
after Thanksgiving.
Even if you can't attend Bryn Mawr Book Club, reading
suggestions are always welcome—just send me an email. Elizabeth Holloway,

The Race to Deliver
The Race to Deliver is a four-mile run/walk that symbolizes
God’s Love We Deliver’s daily race to ensure that no person has to face
the unthinkable combination of illness and hunger. An event for the
whole family, there are special distances for children in all age
groups and a shorter Health Walk option.
The Bryn Mawr team will be out in force, racing and walking to make a
difference. Team Bryn Mawr will meet up for a pasta potluck the night
before the race, November 18, and then again for the fun on a fall
morning, November 19. Visit www.racetodeliver.org to register and/or

Personals
From Fazana Saleem-Ismail, '94:
My family and I moved to Sri Lanka from New York City in
September of 2005 to help with tsunami rebuilding efforts and rented
our house on Staten Island for six months. We extended our stay
in Sri Lanka for an additional six months and want to do so
again. However, our tenants have left, and we are trying
desperately to locate responsible,
trustworthy new tenants
since we won't be able to pay the mortgage without renting. The house
has two levels, 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, washer and dryer, and
much more, including great views of the bay and the Verrazano Bridge
(think San Francisco!). Door-to-door commute to downtown Manhattan is
under 45 minutes via public transportation. We are asking $1,900/mo
plus utilities but are willing to negotiate the rent if need be.
The house is available immediately. We are flexible with regard to the
lease term but are seeking tenants who are willing to sign a lease for
at least six months. Please feel free to forward this information
to your contact lists. Interested parties should call 718 986
6640 or email jiffryi@yahoo.com or fazanai@yahoo.com.
