Bryn Mawr Book Club
On Thursday, November 1, the Book Club will
discuss Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld.
Prep, Sittenfeld's first novel, is about the
experiences of protagonist Lee Fiora, a scholarship
student at a prestigious boarding school.
From the New York Times' review of Prep:
A class act . . . Lee Fiora . . . possesses a
Midwesterner's level head and a gimlet eye for all things
top-drawer. It is Lee's observations of what it's
like to be a scholarship student thrust into a world of
privilege that shape the novel . . . Sittenfeld's dialogue
is so convincing that one wonders if she didn't wear a
wire under her hockey kilt . . . Why Prep deserves pride
of place on any summer recommended reading list is the
incisive and evenhanded way in which Sittenfeld explores
issues of class.

Portrait of A Priestess: The
Hidden History of Women and Religion in Ancient
Greece
Joan Breton Connelly, '79,
received her PhD from Bryn Mawr in 1984, served as an
Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate College from 1984 to
1986 and is now a Professor of Art History at NYU,
On top of that, she has just authored what can only be
characterized as a "very Bryn Mawr" book. Professor
Connelly's "Portrait of a Priestess: The Hidden History of
Women and Religion in Ancient Greece" uses images from
vase painting, portrait sculpture, votive reliefs, and
funerary monuments to bring life to an ancient landscape
where women were far more visible and active than has
previously been acknowledged. She challenges
long-held beliefs to show that priestesses were a
significant and public force in the organization and
administration of religious practice in ancient Greece,
and she examines as well the roles women played in early
Christianity, which excluded them from the
priesthood. Professor Connelly will be delivering an
illustrated lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on
October 9th. The lecture will be followed by a book
signing. This is a great opportunity to hear a
fascinating alumna deliver a talk on a fascinating subject
as well as to get your signed copy of her
book.
