------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Club event on October 20 at the Cosmopolitan Club in support of a Bryn Mawr Bookspace in New York was an all around triumph. Turnout was great, 185 people grabbing appetizers and balancing their wine glasses while they bid enthusiastically on 110 items. The live portion of the auction, led by auctioneer Caroline Willis, '66, was, well, lively. On the traditional side, some of the most vociferous bidding was for a May Day hoop beribboned in College colors and signed by the three living presidents of Bryn Mawr, Wofford, McPherson and Vickers. On the not-so-traditional side, there was fierce jockeying to win a week at a fully staffed house sleeping eight on the beach in Jamaica in February 2006. Stay tuned for the fundraising results. Wendy Greenfield, Executive Director of the Alumnae Association, was on hand to award Gerry Rhoads, '35, the Lifetime of Service Award, recognizing an alumna whose lifetime vision, generosity and consistent commitment to volunteer service to the Bryn Mawr College community has spanned far longer than a quarter of a century. Gerry Rhoads accepted the Steuben cut glass owl hand cooler with a gracious speech, and the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City joined with Wendy and the Alumnae Association in warmly acknowledging Gerry's magnificent contribution over the years. A great night for the New York Bryn Mawr community and a significant step in support of a bookspace in New York for the Bryn Mawr community—but even if you couldn't make it that night, you can still take it a step further! We still need your participation and donations in support of a bookspace. Please contact Ann Schack on at 646 522 9287, aschack@bellatlantic.net, or mail your contribution to Ann at: 300 West 12th Street, #1D, New York, NY 10014. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Young Alumnae Happy Hour Thank you to those who attended the October Young Alumnae Happy Hour despite the rain! We were even joined by a few Philly club members who were in town for the day! Click here to see photos. The Happy Hour continues to travel around New York City. Please join us Thursday, November 17, at the Mercury Bar. We will be there from 6:00 p.m. onwards.

Maya Ajmera, '89, is the founder and president of the Global Fund for Children, a grant-making organization that invests in community-based organizations serving vulnerable children around the world. The Global Fund for Children channels its support into four primary issue areas: hazardous child labor; child trafficking and prostitution; schools and scholarships; and education for boys. Elana Karopkin, '97, is the founding principal of The Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice in the Redhook neighborhood of Brooklyn, a college-preparatory high school with a focus on law now in its second year of operation. Elana has served as the Regional Instructional Specialist for the New York City's Department of Education Region 8, and as Assistant Principal at Harry Van Arsdale High School, where she spearheaded the Ninth Grade New Visions Transformation Project. Prior to that, she worked with the team that created the Cobble Hill School of American Studies, coordinating and supervising its English Department. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bryn Mawr Book Club On Thursday, November 10, Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss 'The Kite Runner' by Khaled Hosseini. From The New York Times review by Edward Hower, August 3, 2003: "This powerful first novel, by an Afghan physician now living in California, tells a story of fierce cruelty and fierce yet redeeming love. Both transform the life of Amir, Khaled Hosseini's privileged young narrator, who comes of age during the last peaceful days of the monarchy, just before his country's revolution and its invasion by Russian forces... In ''The Kite Runner,'' Khaled Hosseini gives us a vivid and engaging story that reminds us how long his people have been struggling to triumph over the forces of violence-forces that continue to threaten them even today."
The December book will be 'Heartburn' by Nora Ephron, and the January selection is 'The Hungry Tide' by Amitav Ghosh in January. Elizabeth Holloway, erobinsonh@aol.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Talk by Victoria Newhouse, '59, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art See the September 22, 2005 issue of 'The New York Review of Books' for a rave review of "Art and the Power of Placement" by Victoria Newhouse, '59. Richard Dorment's review states, "Victoria Newhouse's Art and the Power of Placement is about the vulnerability of works of art in the hands of their owners.... She has written an important book, one that could be read with profit by everyone in the art world." Victoria Newhouse will speak at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on November 15th at 8:00 p.m.
