A Theatrical
Evening with the Bryn Mawr Community of New
York
Featuring
Play It By Ear
Wednesday, February 27,
2008
Imagine
an evening of theatrical fun where an audience of
Bryn Mawr alumnae directs the production.
Imagine a musical conceived and developed from
your and others’ creativity. A word, a
phrase, an object will be instantly transformed
into music and lyrics, drama and humor, fun before
our eyes and ears. All for the benefit of
Bryn Mawr
College.
On
February 27th, Bryn Mawr alumnae and friends are
invited to meet Play It By Ear, a renowned
improvisational vocal group, for an engaging
evening at Opia Restaurant’s theatre space in
Manhattan. Play It By Ear will work with the
audience to transform the empty stage into an
interactive and engaging musical
experience.
Play
It By Ear is a unique, New York-based
performance troupe specializing in musical and
theatrical improvisation through working with members of
the audience. Inspired by world-renowned
opera director Rhoda Levine’s acting and
improvisation classes at the Julliard School, Play
It By Ear has been performing for more than 10
years throughout the U.S. and abroad. To learn
more about Play It By Ear, go to
www.playitbyearinc.org.
The
evening will begin with a reception in Opia’s
private performance area where you can talk with
old friends and meet other alumnae, followed by
the magic created by you and Play It By Ear.
You have the option to continue the camaraderie at
dinner with the cast and your friends in the
adjoining private dining
room.

Bryn
Mawr Book Club
On Thursday, January
10, the Bryn Mawr Book Club will discuss Le Grand Meaulnes by
Alan Fournier.
From
Amazon.com:
 When
Alain-Fournier was killed in battle on the Meuse in 1914, he
left behind Le Grand Meaulnes, a novel of wistful enchantment. The tale is
recounted by François Seurel, whose father heads the village
school where Augustin Meaulnes comes to board. A tall, somber
youth of 17, he instantly becomes the class ringleader, and is
soon known as le grand Meaulnes. When the youth sets off on an
impetuous errand of a few hours and doesn't return for several
days, events take a darker turn. After Meaulnes's reappearance, Seurel
notices his companion's unrest, and tries to uncover its source. He wakes
in the midwinter nights to find Meaulnes pacing the room "like someone
rummaging about in his memory, sorting out scraps." Meaulnes
remains disconsolate, but finally reveals the nature of his travels,
and the strange days of revelry at his unintended destination—the "lost domain" to which he is
desperate to return and doesn't know how to find. Seurel
rightly guesses that Meaulnes met a young woman there, and
that he is in love. "Often afterwards, when he had gone to
sleep after trying desperately to recapture that beautiful
image, he saw in his dreams a procession of young women who
resembled her ... but not one of them was this tall slender
girl." The two friends set about retracing Meaulnes's path,
and their journeys take them into manhood, when Meaulnes finds
at last a way to bring his quest full circle.
Alain-Fournier pairs his tightly twisting plot with a
poignant nostalgia. His descriptive powers bring to the reader
the sights and sounds--the icy winter winds and rattling
carriage wheels--from an earlier time, all the while weaving a
brilliant affirmation of loyalty and lasting
friendship.

Finding Your Way As A
Mother
You are pregnant or the mother
of an infant to six-year old, and everybody’s talking at
you; the “experts,” the media, the grandmothers on the
bus—they all say they know best and better than you on every
mothering issue. On Thursday, January 24, join Magda
Pecsenye, ’94, who writes AskMoxie.org, an internet advice
column for parents, to talk about how to find your own way as
a mother in the middle of all the noise.
Subjects will include:
-
Safety vs. fear mongering
during pregnancy
-
Birth: promoting your own
emotional safety in the face of medical or social
hype
-
Forming a brain trust you
can trust
-
Balancing fear and safety
once your child can walk away from
you
